Landscape Lighting That Earns Its Keep
Layering, color temperature, fixture quality, and control—how to light a desert yard so it works after dark instead of looking like a runway.

In Phoenix, the most comfortable hours to be outside for a third of the year are after sunset. A yard without lighting simply isn't available during the exact window when you'd most want to use it. Lighting is not a finishing touch on an Arizona landscape—it's what doubles the usable hours of everything else you built.
It's also the element most commonly done badly, usually by installing too many identical fixtures in a line.
Think in Layers, Not Fixtures
Good lighting design works the way interior design does: multiple layers, each doing a different job.
Ambient
The general wash that makes a space feel inhabited—downlighting from a pergola or ramada, soft light bouncing off a wall, string lights over a dining area. This is the layer that determines the mood.
Task
Focused light where activity happens: over an outdoor kitchen counter, at a grill, on stair treads. Task lighting has a specific job and should be bright enough to actually do it.
Accent
The layer that creates drama. Uplighting a saguaro or a multi-trunk mesquite, grazing light across a stone veneer wall to reveal its texture, silhouetting an agave against a stucco surface. Accent lighting is what makes a yard look designed rather than merely illuminated.
Safety and Wayfinding
Path lights, step lights, and grade-change markers. The trick is doing this without the "airport runway" effect—which comes from evenly spacing identical path lights down both sides of a walkway. Stagger them, use fewer than you think, and let spill light from other layers carry part of the load.
Color Temperature: Warmer Than You Think
This is the single most impactful specification, and the most frequently botched.
- 2700K: Warm, comparable to incandescent. Our default for ambient and architectural lighting. Flattering on stucco, travertine, and desert stone.
- 3000K: Slightly cooler. Works well for task lighting and on cooler-toned gray hardscape.
- 4000K and above: Avoid in residential landscapes. It reads institutional and turns warm desert materials a strange gray-green. The blue-white LED floodlight is the fastest way to make an expensive yard look cheap.
One exception we make: 4000K can work for uplighting palm trees and some blue-toned agaves, where the cooler light complements the plant's natural color. Used deliberately and sparingly.
Fixture Quality Is Not Optional Here
Arizona is brutal on light fixtures. Intense UV degrades plastics and finishes, monsoon dust infiltrates poor seals, and irrigation water accelerates corrosion.
What we specify:
- Cast brass or copper for in-ground and uplight fixtures. They develop a patina and last decades. Powder-coated aluminum is a reasonable second tier; plastic fixtures are a two-season purchase.
- Sealed, gasketed housings with proper IP ratings for in-grade applications.
- Integrated LED or a serviceable lamp—we prefer fixtures where the light source can be replaced without replacing the entire fixture.
Low Voltage, Properly Sized
Nearly all residential landscape lighting is 12V low voltage, which is safe to work around and simple to modify later. The mistake we correct most often is undersized wire producing voltage drop—the fixtures at the end of a long run come on noticeably dimmer and with a different color cast than the ones near the transformer.
We calculate runs, use appropriately heavy gauge cable, and split circuits across multiple taps rather than daisy-chaining a whole yard onto one line. The transformer gets sized with meaningful headroom so the system can be expanded later without replacing it.
Solar: An Honest Assessment
Solar path lights have a legitimate role—they need no trenching and no transformer, and modern units are far better than they were a decade ago. They're a reasonable choice for a modest yard or a rental.
Their limits are real, though: output is low, brightness fades through the night, panels dull under dust and UV, and integrated batteries typically need replacing every couple of years. For a designed lighting scheme on a substantial landscape investment, hard-wired low voltage is the durable answer.
Controls
An astronomic timer that tracks sunset by date beats a fixed-time clock that drifts out of sync every season. Beyond that, splitting the system into zones—one for ambient and dining, one for accent and architectural, one for path and safety—means you can run a low, quiet scene on an ordinary evening and bring everything up when you're entertaining.

A Practical Starting Point
If you're lighting an existing yard incrementally, start with three moves: uplight your two or three best specimen plants, light the primary path from the door to the seating area, and put warm ambient light over wherever people actually sit. Those three layers alone transform a yard after dark—and they establish the framework everything else builds onto.
